Mike Gregoire, husband of Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire, underwent treatment for colon cancer, the governor disclosed in a statement issued Wednesday.  Doctors were able to remove a cancerous portion of his colon.

“Yesterday, my family received a scary but important reminder about the importance of screening for early detection of cancer," Gregoire said.

Mike Gregoire remains in the hospital but is expected to make a full recovery. Prior to the screening, he had shown no signs of colon cancer.

Eight years ago, Gov. Gregoire was diagnosed with breast cancer, but was able to make a full recovery.

"Mike, I, and our two daughters can't stress enough the importance of learning about, and undergoing cancer screenings," she said.
