There’s a tax on alcohol, cigarettes and maybe in the future... soda.
The mayor in San Francisco says a soda tax can help fight obesity.
So he wants large grocery stores to pay fees on sodas and other drinks with high fructose corn syrup they sell in the city.
The mayor asked his staff to prepare a soda tax law.
Some of the kinks still have to be worked out, like how much the tax would be and when it's applicable.
What is for sure is not everyone is seeing eye to eye on the tax.
"If you are going to put into your body sugar in a soda container it's not giving you nutrients that are good for your body to grow and learn," said Meyla Ruwin, Director of San Francisco School Health Program.
"I think you should leave the taxes up to other sources and allow parents to make up their minds about what their kids drink," said parent Matt Richter.
If approved, money from the fee would go toward a city program emphasizing exercise, diet and other preventative health measures.
