FAQ: Springfield's smoking ban

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Voters approved a ban on smoking in nearly all public places Tuesday. 

Q: When will the smoking ban go into effect?

A: The smoking ban will go into effect 60 days after the election results are certified.




Q: Does the ban include all public buildings?

A: Almost.  The language approved by voters prohibits smoking in "enclosed public places, places of employment and private clubs."  The only exceptions are private residences (unless they are used as a daycare or health care facility) , up to 25% of a hotel's rooms, and outdoor areas of places of employment.

Q: What if I'm caught smoking in a public building?

A: The ordinance calls for a $50 fine per violation.

Q: What if I allow smoking in my business?

A: The ordinance calls for a fine of $100 - $500 per day for anyone owning, operating or managing a business that's found in violation of the ordinance.

Q: Can I smoke outside?

A: The smoking ordinance prohibits smoking within five feet of a playground or a door or window of a place where smoking is prohibited.
