A former big leaguer who played with Hall of Famers Mickey Mantle and Yogi Berra has died after a long illness. Jerry Lumpe was 81. He lived in the Springfield area after retiring from Major League Baseball after the 1967 season. He served for many years as an executive with Empire Bank after baseball.
Lumpe played high school in Warsaw, Mo. before he was signed right out of high school by the New York Yankees. He made his big league debut in 1956 as an infielder with the Yankees. The Yankees traded Lumpe to the Kansas City Athletics in 1959. He played for the A’s until he was traded to the Detroit Tigers after the 1963 season.
The Springfield Cardinals will honor Lumpe with a moment of silence before Saturday night's game.
