Springfield Man Harassed by Debt Collectors When He Doesn't Owe Money

By KSPR News
By Joanna Small

A Springfield man says he is being endlessly threatened and harassed by a company that doesn't even exist.

It may be the latest scam associated with identity theft.

Derek Kimmis admits his girlfriend made a mistake.

She was checking into payday loans online and shared some of her personal information.

But she never actually took out a loan and doesn't owe anyone any money.

That's not what Kimmis hears dozens of times a day.

"It became outlandish and ridiculous- to the point now, 30 phone calls a day on the cell phone, 15 to 20 at work."

Kimmis feels like he's being stalked by an unidentifiable and unreachable perpetrator- except on its terms.

After Kimmis' girlfriend filled out some online forms inquiring about the payday loan, a company called Affidavit Processing Services began calling her demanding she re-pay money she never borrowed.

"$237 June 30th was due and another $250 by July 9th was due. They have a fax number, an email address, the name of the company but never an address and never a telephone number to contact them," Kimmis tells us, refering to emails the company sent his girlfriend.

Technically there are numbers, but none working.

That's according to Kimmis, thousands of others who claim to be the victims of similar scams, and KSPR News.

We tried calling too, to no avail.

Kimmis filed a police report in Springfield and tried to do the same in elk Ridge, Maryland, where he traced one of the numbers.

"I'm willing to take the fartherest steps I have to to make sure nobody is naïve enough to give these people a dime of their money because it's not a legitimate company."

Unfortunately right now that step is merely sharing his story and thinking like the enemy; a new phone number may be in order.

Within the last few days Kimmis says other callers, claiming to be from the Department of Crime Prevention, have been harassing him as well.

A quick internet search reveals both those companies have numerous complaints against them, and neither is recognized by the Better Business Bureau.
