Chances are you've eaten dinner, shopped, or even worked at a place that is operating outside of the law, and you didn't know it.
That is, until now.
The Missouri Department of Revenue is now posting a list of businesses online that have had their sales tax licenses revoked. Some listed are out of business, but many continue to be up and running.
KSPR popped in on one business owner on the list. When we asked the owner of Blimpie Subs and Sandwiches on East Sunshine in Springfield why he was operating without a sales tax license, he said he had no idea why he was on the list.
"It's news to me," said Michael Clemons. "I will contact the Missouri Department of Revenue and see what's going on."
But a spokesperson with the Department of Revenue says all business owners get fair warning to pay up. "Everyone receives a letter 30 days before revokation," says spokesman Maura Browning. "There is no question that those steps are going to be taken."
Clemons says he never received a certified letter from the state.
The Missouri Department of Revenue says there are more than a thousand businesses across Missouri that have failed to pay their taxes, whether through sales tax or withholdings. That's money that could go towards road improvements, education, or conservation. Almost half of those businesses are in the Ozarks.
The owner of Ziggie's Restaurant in Springfield is also on the list. The owner, Agim Zendeli, says he owed the state around $20,000, but that he would have the debt taken care of by the end of the week. He says he fell behind after January's ice storm damaged his warehouse and restaurants.
The shaming system is the department's best defense for now. Spokesmen say it's about time that the money collected for the state actually gets collected.
