Update Greene County Sheriff's Office News Release: The Greene County Sheriff’s Office will not have adequate staffing on Sunday, March 21st, to facilitate the transport of inmate David Williams to a private funeral service. Associate Circuit Judge Mark Powell ruled
Williams could attend the private service if the Sheriff’s Office had enough staff to transport Williams to and from the service while not allowing contact with anyone other than law enforcement.
A judge had ruled Friday morning that David Williams would be allowed to leave jail for Sunday's private visitation for his fiancee's three children who died in a Monday morning house fire. The ruling stated he can go if the Greene County Sheriff’s office has the resources to escort him.
The judge says Williams will not be allowed to have contact with others and will be escorted by Greene County Deputies.
Williams will not be able to leave jail for Monday's funeral for the kids.
Greene County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Dan Patterson argued Williams should not be allowed to attend because he is not related to the children. Patterson also told the judge Williams behavior since his arrest has been erratic. He says Williams is in a protective cell for routinely beating his head against a table. Patterson says he believes there is risk Williams will try to escape because he faces serious time in jail. He questioned if Williams might harm himself.
Williams’ attorney, Andy Hosmer, argued the children’s mother wants Williams to attend the funeral. He says Williams is “becoming stronger” and said his demeanor is improving. Hosmer told the judge the private ceremony would be easier for deputies to monitor his behavior. “We are asking that he and his fiancé can get some closure,” Hosmer said.
Hosmer says Williams was a father figure for the children. Patterson questioned their bond saying the children often stayed with other relatives in Kentucky during Williams and Watson’s relationship.
The judge ruled Williams’ bond will stay the same at $250,000. A preliminary court date is set for May 3, 2010.
Williams is charged with felony arson for a Monday morning fire at a home on West Olive in Springfield.
He and his fiancee Violet Watson escaped the flames, Watson's father and her 3 children did not.
Devin Watson, who's 4; Alexis Watson, who's 7; and Kelsey Watson, who's 5 all died in the blaze. Their grandfather is listed in serious condition at the hospital.
