A grandfather wants to know why two burglars kicked in his door, holding knives. The 57-year-old man didn't question grabbing his gun and quickly firing at the masked men. He asked KSPR not to show his identity in case someone wants to retaliate.
In his house on East Calhoun, he says you won't find him without “Roscoe,” his .357 Magnum.
"'Roscoe' came to the rescue," the man said. Around 11:15 p.m. Wednesday, he was babysitting his two-month-old grandson. He says he heard rustling at his back door.
"As I picked up my firearm, men in all black with ski masks and a knife kicked in the front,” he said. “I put a couple rounds in him."
The 57-year-old says another man with a mask came in next. "I shot at him too and he stumbled sideways out the front door screaming," he said.
He says the first burglar, who was hit twice in the chest, ran for the back door but it was locked. "I cleared the bedroom and realized he jumped out the top window," he said.
The man says during the fight a bullet hit the wall and another nailed the microwave. "I hope I didn't kill anyone but there is someone walking around with lead in them," the man said.
The Greene County prosecutor hasn't seen the report for this case but says homeowners have the right to protect themselves from home invasions. "You may not have time to give a warning,” Prosecutor Darrell Moore said. “You have the right to defend yourself unless it’s police serving a search warrant and they usually warn you."
Moore says there are many Castle Doctrine myths. "There is the old saying, 'Drag someone on your porch and the answer is no,'” Moore said. “If you have the right to use deadly force it does not matter where you shoot them."
The grandpa says if he had to do it all over he'd shoot at the masked men again. "Don't bring a knife to a gun fight," he said.
Police say they were called to a home just four miles from the burglary where they found a man shot. He went to the hospital and is expected to live. Police are waiting to question him. Officers made one arrest. The case is still under investigation.
