Missouri State University Restricting Smoking on Campus Starting Fall 2010

By Natalie Swallow

Restrictions on smoking on Missouri State University's campus will start this fall.

MSU President Mike Nietzel will be talking about the new policy Friday at the Board of Governors meeting.

A committee formed in the fall to tackle the smoking issue recently passed on its recommendations to Nietzel.

He has since made it an administrative policy.

Starting this August, there will be greatly restricted designated smoking areas on campus with the intent in two years to be a smoke-free campus with a few exceptions.

Earle Doman, vice president of student affairs at MSU, says another committee is in the process of determining where the designated smoking areas will be.

"They're looking at it. We want to make sure it's not on campus pathways, sidewalks, that's one of biggest concerns expressed, want to make sure it's not by open windows, ventilation systems, that's process going on right now, determining what locations can be," Doman said.

These recommendations will be released campus wide within the next week or two for feedback.

Also with this new policy, the campus is creating a comprehensive educational awareness campaign about smoking.

The cost to make the changes is minimal, with money most likely coming from the wellness fund.

The university anticipates having little enforcement and depending on community cooperation to respect the new smoking policy.
