24 hours after 8-month-old Eddie Salazar Junior's body was found in the Spring River, it was a much different scene on the street where the story first unraveled.
Crime tape is gone and a memorial of flowers and candles rests at the foot of the Salazar driveway.
"I just keep thinking of that poor baby. An innocent life is gone for no reason. It's so...so horrible," said Pam Boswell.
Boswell lives next door to Salazar, and says when she heard Eddie Senior might be responsible for his own son's death, she didn't know what to think.
"When I was coming home from work, if he was coming home at the same time, he would always say hi, how are you? That type of thing. Based on that I thought he was a pretty nice guy, but I guess you just never know," said Boswell.
Salazar was arrested Friday night for filing a false police report, after he led police to an alleged suspect and a dead end.
Police believed the break-in and abduction story for more than 24 hours, but neighbors say they always thought there was a loophole in that story.
The next door neighbor told me the night the baby disappeared, Salazar backed his car into the garage, something they'd never seen before.
But even with some abnormalities in the story, others don't see how he is responsible.
"I still have doubts. I don't believe he did it," said Karina Escobedo.
Escobedo knew Salazar Senior, and says this seems out of character for the 29-year-old father.
"Me and my ex-boyfriend used to live together, and he used to visit him. He seemed like a pretty nice guy. He used to play with my little girls, and everything. He was always a really nice person," said Escobedo.
So what went wrong?
That's the question everyone in Carthage hopes will be answered as the investigation into 8-month-old Eddie Salazar Junior's death moves forward.
An autopsy on the 8-month-old will be performed Monday at 10:30 in Columbia.
A memorial page for Eddie Salazar Jr. has also been set up on Facebook. You can join the group by clicking here.
