Dallas County, MO, Gets Life-Changing Addition

By KSPR News

The popular Village People song says "it's a place you can go," but only if you have one to go to.

And now Dallas County may have gotten the boost it needs to get the area's first YMCA off the ground.

This week a federal program made tax credits available to local businesses willing to donate to the Y.

Staff, the community, and the people who live in it hope that will enable the completition of a project that has the potential to revive a floundering county.

The lack of opportunity- ironically- is never more clear than on a dreary day in Dallas County.

That's why- no neon necessary-one sign shines so brightly for foster mom Paula Mabary.

"Some of our kids have never had an opportunity to be in an organized sport where they have the structure, self-control."

Both her foster and own children have found a new lease on life inside Dallas County's first YMCA, where they take martial arts, one of just four classes available right now.

"This over here is going to be wellness equipment," Center Director Dominic Santomassimo explains as he shows us around.

Less than 16,000 people live in Dallas County but there's really nothing like the Y in this area.

That's why staff hopes to fill the gym floor.

The Y has been in the planning phase since March; in September it found a home in a building owned by now next door neighbor First Baptist Church, but because it relies on private funds the non-profit is still thousands away from being fully functional.

"It's rough for everybody," Buffalo Mayor Jerry Hardesty tells us.

New tax credits for those willing to donate could be the push the y needs to come to a community that desperately needs it.

Buffalo's had just one new business open in the last year.

Like a business, the YMCA will employ, but maybe more importantly, inspire.

"They just will be able to offer so much to our community," says Mabary.

The dallas County YMCA is supposed to open in February.

There is not exact date because the donation goal must be met before a grand opening can happen.
