30,000- that's the troop increase President Obama is expected to announce Tuesday at West Point.
But just how many of them will be Missourians?
"I can't wait to go back actually."
It appears President Obama and Specialist Chad Oyer are on the same page.
Oyer wants to go to Afghanistan; Obama wants him to too.
"When I got over there I realized it was the perfect place for me."
Oyer was deployed there once before, a year ago.
He was part of a team of soldiers that taught Afghan civilians about agriculture and- with a few exceptions- he felt safe doing it.
"There was one attack. We were out doing an engagement and a suicide bomber had blown himself up in front of another unit," Oyer tells us.
No casualties then, but the situation is getting worse there.
Oyer says the unit that replaced his had two soldiers injured outside the very gates he guarded.
Increasing violence is part of the reason obama is expected to ramp up american troops in Afghanistan.
Whether or not Obama's announcement will have any impact on the Missouri National Guard is really just a guessing game.
There are about 11,500 troops with the Missouri Guard, yet roughly just 1,100 are deployed right now.
About half are in Afghanistan.
"We're not familiar with how it will affect Missouri, if it will affect Missouri at all," explains Major David Crocker.
And if it does- when.
"It could be up to multiple years before we would see a demand in Missouri troops," Crocker continues.
Oyer isn't waiting for the President's approval; he volunteered to go on his first tour, and he is doing the same the second time around.
"It gave me more of a fulfillment. I'm actually doing something with my life. I get to help others and be a soldier rather than do it the one week a month I usually do," Oyer concludes.
Right now there are 1,900 Fort Leonard Wood soliders deployed; 90% of them are in Iraq and only 10% are in Afghanistan.
