Preliminary Report: Anderson Shot Himself During Springfield Traffic Stop

The Greene county sheriff's department is releasing more details about a fatal shooting in north Springfield this week.
Lance Anderson was killed on Division in what was thought to be a shoot-out with officers.
It turns out Anderson did not fire at officers at all.

THE FULL REPORT FROM GREENE COUNTY:
Detectives are still continuing the investigation but have some preliminary information regarding the incident. Upon reviewing the forensic evidence and conducting interviews of witnesses and those involved, detectives have the following to release:

According to witnesses in the truck, they were aware that it was law enforcement behind them prior to the stop. When emergency lights were activated, Anderson advised the other occupants to “floor it”, the driver refused and stopped. Anderson stated that he was going to not be taken and was going to kill himself. According to both witnesses in the truck and an outside witness he exited with a handgun that was in his waistband.
A shot was fired by Anderson which appeared to strike himself in the lower abdomen and groin. A Greene County Detective and Deputy US Marshal gave verbal commands and observed the handgun being brought up, in which they fired their weapons in which they struck Anderson multiple times. Anderson also fired a shot with his weapon to his head.

All rounds that were fired by Anderson and Law Enforcement were accounted for at the scene and at the autopsy. A total amount of 8 rounds were fired, two by Anderson and six by law enforcement.

According to the preliminary results from the Greene County Medical Examiners Office, the cause of death was due to internal bleeding into the chest caused by two gunshot wounds, in addition to a self inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Information gathered during the investigation from multiple sources
confirmed that he was the suspect in the shooting at the Bolivar Police Officers on November 23rd 2009. Greene County Detectives have been working with the Taney County Sheriff’s Detectives that investigated the theft of the 40 caliber handgun that was used in the shootings in Bolivar and Springfield. The weapon was stolen on October 26th in Taney County. On October 28th a theft was in progress at a different location in Taney County, when the homeowner heard someone breaking into his vehicle at 2 AM, he went outside and yelled. The thief then fired a 40 caliber handgun at the homeowner and struck him in the leg, the suspect fled the scene.
Detectives believe based on their investigations that Anderson was the suspect in this case also.

The investigation into the shooting and the various other crimes is ongoing at this time. Detectives involved in the shooting will remain on paid administrative leave until the administrative investigation is concluded and presented to the Springfield Police Department for review, it will then presented to the Greene County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for their
review. Sheriff Arnott will be available for interviews regarding this
investigation on Monday, November 30th.
