Lance Anderson was facing warrants for probation violation and felony stealing. If arrested, he likely would have faced more charges.
Police say it's because of those numerous charges that Anderson refused to be taken alive.
At Frisco and Division in Springfield, Wednesday, you won't see a roadside memorial. Only yellow chalk serves as a reminder of what happened here Tuesday night.
Those living near the intersection are trying to forget Anderson, while his girlfriend deals with her loss.
"Lance was good man. Se was strong," says Shaelynne Wilson.
It all started eight days ago, in Bolivar, when police say they received a tip Anderson was in the area.
"We received a tip that Lance Anderson was armed and he wasn't going to be taken by law enforcement," says Bolivar Police Chief Michael Siebert.
Monday, police tried to pull him over for running a stop sign.
"We didn't know who he was when he ran the stop sign. Officers tried to stop him, he took off," says Siebert.
He parked his car in the driveway of an abandoned home, and fled on foot. Wilson was there.
"He got out of the car and told me that he loved me. He had warrants. He had to run," says Wilson.
Lindy Mitchell, who lives on the other side of that driveway, heard what happened next.
"I heard three pops, loud pops," says Mitchell.
"When I heard the gunshots, I thought they had shot him," says Wilson.
"We know that he was firing at the officers because he said so to several friends that he texted," says Siebert.
"Later, when i talked to him, he said he fired so I could get out of the car," says Wilson.
Bolivar police didn't find Anderson Monday, but they did find a number of stolen items in his home.
"There was a ton of it. there was a couple of long tables full of it. We got guns. We got electronics," says Siebert.
It's the same home Wilson lives in.
"I knew some things were stolen. I didn't know. I didn't know where they come from or how he got them," says Wilson.
Tuesday, Bolivar police got another tip... that Anderson fled to Springfield.
There, Greene Co. sheriff's deputies and US Marshalls tried to apprehend him. According to officials, Anderson fired once. They returned fire, leading to the grizzly scene Wilson will never forget.
