Good Behavior Comes with Good Rewards for Weller Students

By Natalie Swallow

Students at one Springfield elementary school are being rewarded for their good behavior with some help from students and parents from another school.

Weller Elementary is encouraging its students to do the right thing.

Doing that can earn the students PRIDE bucks they can cash in each week for donated gear from Disney Elementary.

For some, it's the highlight of their week.

Fifth grader Zach Perry is shopping at the Weller PRIDE Panther Store, looking for something to spend his hard earned pride bucks on.

It doesn't take him long to find the perfect new outfit.

"I got this pink Hollister shirt and some Southpole shorts and a pair of these Nikes," he said.

Zach along with other Weller Elementary students can earn up to five PRIDE bucks a week for good behavior.

"We're always looking for positive things to keep kids motivated because majority of kids are doing right thing, and we want to show them that's the thing to do," Weller Principal Marilyn Monroe said.

Every Friday the students can come to the store to cash in.

It's five bucks for an outfit or a pair of shoes. Toys range from five dollars to forty dollars and higher, keeping some students saving up.

Disney Elementary parents man the store and help gather the goods for Weller students.

"We've been collecting donations. We've been hitting garage sales," Disney parent Kim Acuff said. "It's providing some things to them that they might not otherwise get to have."

The students though aren't always looking for themselves.

"It's pretty heart warming. They buy things for themselves. They save things for siblings, buy things for parents," Monroe said.

Fifth grader Naylis Townsen decided to spend 10 of her pride bucks on a big pack of wash cloths.

"I always need one at my house, and these are for my mom. I wanted to be nice and buy her these at the store," she said.

She knows her mom will be proud of her selfless act too.

"She's going to feel like she raised me right," Naylis said.

Besides just good behavior and helping others, Naylis is also learning money management with 25 more PRIDE bucks she's saved.

"Because in case I saw something I liked, and it would cost me like $40, so I saved my money," she said.

Whether they spend their money every week or decide to save it, the PRIDE Panther Store helps motivate Weller students.

"It's helped our whole school. We really try to do positive things here at Weller," Monroe said.

Weller and Disney started the partnership near the end of last school year.
