Researchers try to use algae to fight malaria

By Kyle Bosch

ST. LOUIS (AP) - St. Louis researchers are trying to engineer algae capable of killing the mosquito larvae that transmits malaria.

The Donald Danforth Plant Science Center said Monday it has received a $100,000 grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The research will be done by Dr. Richard Sayre at the plant center, along with other researchers. The grants from the Seattle-based Gates Foundation were awarded to dozens of scientists working on bold ways to improve health in developing countries.

The plant center says 600 million people are infected with malaria each year, resulting in more than 1 million deaths. About 90 percent of the deaths happen in sub-Saharan Africa, primarily among children.
