Willard students want highway expanded

By Kyle Bosch

WILLARD, Mo. (AP) - Willard High School students are circulating petitions asking the state to widen a deadly stretch of U.S. 160 from two lanes to four between Willard and Springfield.

The petition drive started Monday, weeks after three Willard High students died in a collision on the highway.

Seventeen-year-old Kearsten Jones says the Student Government Association will lead the petition drive, first at the school and then into Willard and adjacent communities.

The students plan to present the petitions on Dec. 17 to the Ozarks Transportation Organization, which works with the Missouri Department of Transportation to prioritize road projects.

The Ozark organization has long sought to expand the highway, but funding has not been available.
