The Christian County Assessor is in some hot water tonight with the feds, but she's not alone.
Her husband and one of their employees are in there with her- for a different reason.
Jasmine Road in Clever is host to a significant amount property a federal grand jury claims the Christian County Assessor never assessed.
Coincidence?
Authorities say not; it is Sandra Bryant-Littles' stuff.
“Frankly we weren't expecting it at this time. We were a little beside ourselves,” says John Grubaugh, Christian County Presiding Commissioner.
Bryant-Littles was arrested at her county office Thursday morning.
She’s charged with four counts of mail fraud for not paying property taxes on six vehicles, two tractors, three utility and flat-bed trailers, a horse trailer, and more than 100 head of cattle.
Actually, that number is debatable.
“It’s hard enough to get anything done from the law anyway and then when you get an incident like this it makes everybody look a little bad.”
Jim Stine, one of the Littles' neighbors and a victim of several cattle rustling crimes had a hard time swallowing the next accusation.
Lonnie Utah Littles, Bryant-Littles’ husband, and Jesse Rice, one of their employees, were also arrested Thursday on separate federal bank fraud charges.
The pair claimed more than 50 head of cattle were stolen from their property last February; the feds say the men sold the animals themselves.
We tried to contact the trio.
Their gate was locked, and no one answered their phone.
“I’m just saddened by the charges, I’m saddened,” says Grubaugh.
The county doesn't have any answers yet either.
Suddenly the assessor's seat is in limbo.
If convicted the charges against Bryant-Littles carry a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
