Internet Hoax Forces Rolla Police to Change Phone Number

By KSPR News

At least 50 times a day for the past two years, someone calls the Rolla Police Department and asks about Ashley Flores.

She's missing; she's the subject of an Amber Alert; she needs your help. Or so the story goes.

And that's all it is -- a story. "Ashley Flores" doesn't live in Rolla, and never did. There's a photo attached to the tale, but no one's even sure if the girl in the photo is named Ashley.

An internet hoax run wild, and now it has forced the Rolla Police Department to change its number, in hopes of stopping the daily phone calls about a hoax.

"We have made all reasonable efforts to put an end to the transmission of this false alert without success," says Mark Kearse, Rolla's chief of police. "Due to the overwhelming number of calls we receive daily, we have made the difficult decision to change our department phone number."

Starting Oct. 17, the new phone number for the Rolla Police Department is (573) 308-1213.
