Church Goes to the Dogs, Cats, and Other Creatures

By KSPR News

Church has gone to the dogs- and cats, maybe even a reptile or two.

They all got the pastor's blessing Saturday.

Downtown Springfield's Christ Episcopal Church celebrated the feast of St. Francis of Assisi with "the blessing of the animals."

Pet owners were invited to bring their animals for a personal blessing; the idea is they're part of our families and they need protection too.

“I think the animals here are very close to us just like our children and our friends and family, so I think it's a good thing,” explains Kathy Sheppard, the church’s education director.

The blessings were of course free of charge, but donations were welcome.

Participants were asked to bring a bag of dry dog or cat food to give to the Southwest Missouri Humane Society.
