H1N1 flu vaccine expected in Arkansas in October

By Brad Belote

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - A state Health Department official says the first doses of the swine flu vaccine are to arrive in Arkansas
in late October.

Infectious disease branch chief Dr. James Phillips says the state is expecting 400,000 to 450,000 doses. He says a second
vaccine shipment is expected three to four weeks after the first.

Priority for the vaccine is pregnant women, parents and caregivers of infants under 6 months old, people between the ages
of 5 and 24, health care workers and anyone considered to be at significant risk.

Phillips say it will be a few more months before the vaccine is widely available.

The virus is also known as H1N1 and is spread easily through coughing, sneezing or touch. At least five deaths in Arkansas have
been connected to the illness.
