New Law Bans Texting by Driving Teens

By Brad Belote

Teens - put your phones down when you are behind the wheel.

Thursday, Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon signed a bill that prohibits drivers 21 and younger from texting while driving.

The new law, which goes into effect August 28, makes illegal "reading, sending or writing a text message" while driving.

The law allows texting while driving if you are calling in an emergency, reporting a crime, or you are commercial truck driver communicating with a dispatcher.

A AAA survey found 46% of teens say they send text messages while driving. Studies have compared the risk of texting while driving to that of drunk driving.
