'Extreme Makeover' Gives Work to Jobless

By KSPR News

"I hung up on them cause I thought it was a scam."

After the initial shock wore off Sam Clifton picked the phone back up and committed to a project that's already changed his life.

“It’s unbelievable how much time it's taken to get it going."

But maybe more unbelievable- how much satisfaction Clifton and his wife and business partner Michelle have gotten in return.

The sole employees of Millstone Custom Homes have no idea why they were chosen as the builders, but the opportunity is a gift- one they can pass on to others in their struggling field.

“The poor economy may actually be helping Extreme Makeover; the construction industry just chugging along, subcontractors' schedules are wide-open.

“There’s people I called that haven't had work, I know that for a fact. There's people having a hard time paying for certain things for their family,” Clifton tells us.

And while participation won't pay the bills, he says it will be an inspiration and quite an undertaking.

Clifton has enlisted the help of 600 skilled workers- subcontractors who normally compete for projects, now colleagues working on the same project.

"We're going to have 75 framers on this house. Obviously, there's not one crew that has 75 framers."

Clifton estimates 100 subcontractors, almost all he's personally recruited, have signed on.

The first job in months for some will, ironically, last a lifetime.
