US, Russia reach preliminary nuclear weapons deal

By KSPR News

MOSCOW (AP) - President Barack Obama says a preliminary deal on reducing nuclear stockpiles should counter a "drift" in relations between the U.S. and Russia.

Obama says he and his counterpart Dmitry Medvedev are "committed to leaving behind the suspicion and rivalry of the past."

Medvedev calls today's meeting in Moscow an important first step in revitalizing relations.

With the preliminary deal to cut nuclear stockpiles to as few as 1,500 warheads each, Obama says it's important that the U.S. and Russia lead by example. At a Kremlin news conference after his meeting with Medvedev, Obama said he hopes to host a summit on global nuclear security next year.
