Independence Day & Weekend Forecast

By Meteorologist Craig Carnesi

Hello and thanks for stopping by the KSPR Weather Blog!

It will be two distinctively different days weather-wise this weekend.  Saturday brings us showers and storm chances for the afternoon and evening, while Sunday brings us cooler and mostly drier weather.

The Storm Prediction Center has highlighted most of our area under a slight risk for severe storms.

A storm system will move through Saturday afternoon and evening.  This will likely bring us showers and some strong to severe storms.  The main threats look to be damaging winds, frequent lightning and heavy downpours.  We can never rule out tornadoes, but the environment does look favorable for tornadic activity.

The Hi- Res FutureCast below shows the progression of storm chances.  We could see a few early storms to the north and east of Springfield.

It will warm up quickly into the middle and upper 80s.  With the daytime heating and an unstable atmosphere, isolated showers and storms will begin to be possible by early afternoon.

The Hi-Res FutureCast shows a possible break in the action around 7, but the break is quickly followed by more storms.

Our storm chances will all hinge on the timing of the storm system and trailing cold front.  It looks like the best chances will come in the afternoon and evening.  Please be careful when you are out and about celebrating Independence Day.

As for Sunday, we may see a few lingering showers with mostly cloudy skies.  Afternoon highs will be quite pleasant in the lower 80s.

Please, go out and make it a GREAT and SAFE Holiday Weekend!
