Marionville Mayor Doris Rapp called an emergency board of alderman meeting monday evening. There, the board voted unanimously to fire its city clerk of 16 years, Claudia White.
"She was three years and something behind on her sewer bill and so they been getting on to people around town pretty heavy recently about deliquent sewer bills so that just didn't set too good," says Alderman Dan Clevenger.
When the city decided to check out the sewer bill, it found other problems.
"We got some people up there now going through the office and they have found some red flags," says Clevenger.
When asked if that means there are more problems than just the sewer bill, Clevenger said, "I probably better not comment on that part cause we're just not sure yet."
Clevenger says bad book keeping is one of those red flags, "it's all disorganized and no one could really see what was going on."
Alderman Clevenger is the only member of the board that would go on camera Thursday. The mayor also refused.
The highway patrol will take over the investigation, starting monday. Marionville police say the patrol will investigate the theft of city funds.
Those who know White say she isn't the type of woman to steal.
"I just have always thought of her to be a wonderful person and somebody who would be a trustworthy person," says Jill Bettinger, who goes to church with Claudia White.
Thursday White wouldn't go on camera to respond to the accusations. She said it's too early for her to comment, and wouldn't say if or when she would.
"We just hope there's nothing else," said Clevenger.
Whatever did happen, Clevenger blames a lack of oversight.
"We're going to be pretty vigilent right now and we're going to change a lot of ways things are done at city hall," said Clevenger.
