Teen pleads guilty in school shooting

By Brad Belote

JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) - A Joplin teen has pleaded guilty to firing an assault rifle in his middle school and threatening his principal.

The Joplin Globe reported on its Web site that Thomas White pleaded guilty Friday to two counts of first-degree assault and one count of armed criminal action.

Prosecutors say White fired one round into a ceiling and repeatedly tried to shoot the principal at Memorial Middle School in Joplin in October 2006. Police say the gun jammed because of an improperly seated ammunition clip. No one was injured.

White was 13 at the time but was to be tried as an adult.

Earlier this year, a state psychiatrist found White mentally incompetent to assist in his defense but a judge in May ordered a second evaluation.
