Uninsured Families Struggle in Recession

By KSPR News

40,000 people are living in Greene Co. without health insurance. That's 15% of the population.

Patients at the Jordan Valley Community Health Center are among those numbers. They can take advantage of a program giving them care if they make below 200% of the poverty level.

For and individual, that's $21,600, or $44,000 for a family of four.

So, those who are uninsured and unemployed can still get access to health care. It's $20 for most visits.

"That really includes essentially all labs and x-rays that we do," according to Dr. Chan Ngo, the Medical Director at the clinic.

"If it wasn't for that, I don't know what I would do," says Kevin Spell, who visits the clinic.

"Patients just can't afford their insurance anymore so they'll get off of it and we're just happy that we're able to provide care for them at a very reasonable to minimal price," says Dr. Ngo.

Kevin Spell is a self-proclaimed "jack-of-all-trades," but he's been having trouble getting work since moving to the Ozarks a year ago.

"There's really no need for a contractor right now," he says.

So, his family is without health insurance, and Jordan Valley doesn't have emergency room services.

"I hope nothing bad happens, you know, cause I don't know what's going to happen then," says Spell.

Like many on the job hunt now, Spell's looking for more than a paycheck.

"I'm not really worried about how much money to make - it's insurance, because I want my family to be taken care of - that's the most important thing, right now," says Spell.
