When there's an emergency, many people rely on ham-radio operators to get the word out.
Ham operators in Webster County will show off those skills June 27-28, as part of a nationwide demonstration designed to showcase the emergency communication capabilities of ham radios.
"Using only emergency power supplies and portable equipment, ham operators will construct an emergency station in the grassy area between Radio Shack and the WalMart Supercenter in Marshfield," Webster County emergency managers said in a news release.
"The communication system that ham operators can quickly create helps response agencies prioritize manpower and resources and save lives," says Webster County ARES coordinator Jim Dobkins. "When all other communication fails, ham radios will still work. Our team is a valuable part of disaster response."
ARES stands for Amateur Radio Emergency Service. Webster County has 18 ARES members. To learn more,
