If you weren't left in the dark Friday, you've made the switch to digital. For those who bought a new digital set, Springfield is asking you to "re-set your old TV by recycling it. The Computer Recycling Center says dumping could be a disaster.
With the digital transition looming, television sales spiked.
"I think it gives everybody a reason to buy a new TV, we hope so, it's going to help the economy, but, when they do that, the old TV ends up in the closet or the garage and not really quite sure what to do with them," says John Missildine, the General Manager at Springfield's Computer Recycling Center.
...Or in the landfill. So, Springfield is asking Ozarkers to recycle
The Computer Recycling Center is the only state-certified electronics-waste recycler in the Ozarks. It will scrap your old set for $20.
It says in the last six months, it's seen 3 to 5 times more sets coming through the door. It also emphasizes the need to recycle because of lead and other harmful chemicals in TV's. If they go in the landfill, those chemicals could wind up in our water.
"If these things go to landfills or they out in the ditch somewhere, then the lead may get down into the ground water and that could create a serious problem, especially with the amount that we have now that are obsolete, so to speak," says Missildine.
The Computer Recycling Center is open Monday thru Saturday 9 to 5.
