Triple Homicide: Teen Missed Class, Didn’t Return Texts Sunday Night

By Reporter: Emily Rittman, Photographer: Ben Knaup

Authorities will hold a press conference early Thursday morning to release more details about three people found dead in their Cole Camp home. Sixty-four-year-old Donnie Luetjen, his wife 61-year-old Sharon and their 15-year-old granddaughter Taron were shot to death.

During class Wednesday, driver’s education teacher Tracy Meuschke says he struggled to focus. He says he had to for his students whose classmate was killed. 15-year-old Taron Luetjen would have completed driver's education class Wednesday but instead investigators were trying to find out who killed her and her family.

Meuschke says Taron, one of his most bubbly students, never came to class Monday. “She didn't show and I asked everyone if they'd seen her and no one had any answer," Meuschke says. The teacher says he thought about stopping by the family’s home himself but decided to send a close family friend and neighbor. "She called me with the devastating news," Meuschke says. Someone shot Taron, her grandmother Sharon, and her grandfather Donnie reportedly placing them side by side.

"We moved here the summer before my eighth grade year and Taron was one of my first friends and we've been friends ever since," 15-year-old student driver and friend Joe Andersen says. He says another 17-year-old friend may be the last person to see Taron alive. "Her best friend was with her on Sunday night between 2:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. then went home and texted Taron until 10:30 p.m.," Andersen says.

It’s unclear who saw Taron's grandparents last. For seven years, Sharon worked at Regal-Beloit in Lincoln, MO just a few miles south of Cole Camp. Employees at the motor assembly company refused to say when Sharon last worked. The human resource director would say Sharon was a great employee who will be greatly missed.

"Whether it's a family dispute or robbery, we'll have to wait until the police tell us," Family friend EL Eickhoff says. He says the family did have a bitter fight over Taron but the couple adopted her years ago. Many in the community say the Luetjen’s raised Taron as their own. Eickhoff also told KSPR Donnie had an extensive collection of expensive arrowheads.

Meuschke and fellow student drivers say Taron never mentioned any problems at her home or any fears that someone wanted to hurt the family. "It’s a sad day for Cole Camp because they were three fantastic people," Meuschke says.

KSPR talked to Taron's 17-year-old friend, she asked not to have her name released. The teen says on Sunday she and Taron were texting about their plans for the next day and passing driver’s education class. She says after 10:30 p.m. she could never reach her friend again. She says she tried the family’s home phone and Sharon’s cell phone but could not get any answer. She says Taron had asked if she could stay the night Sunday evening but the Luetjen’s decided against it.
