Summer starts in just a few hours for Springfield Public Schools students and teachers.
For one teacher at Pleasant View Elementary it’s her last "last day of school."
Forty-five years after coming to Pleasant View Elementary to start her teaching career, fourth grade teacher Sandra Allen is finishing it here.
"I have enjoyed every day. I've enjoyed every group I've had," Allen said.
And they've enjoyed her.
"She's probably my favorite out of all the teachers because she was most funnest," fourth grader Wyatt Larson said.
Allen says she's seen huge advances in technology through the years, but students have stayed generally the same.
"They're still willing to learn, and this class has definitely been a class that wants to learn," Allen said.
She's ending her career on a good note, but Allen says she's ready to pass the torch.
"There's younger ones coming on and I'm sure they'll feel same way I have felt," Allen said. "I would just say love it and put your heart into it."
While her heart may miss the shining faces of fourth graders everyday, there's one thing about teaching she's ready to let go of.
"Getting up at five every morning. I usually get up at five and try to get to school about 10 after six or so, so probably that won't be too hard to handle," Allen said.
Still, her last "last day" doesn't come without some emotion.
"Hopefully I can get through the last day without crying, but it's going to be sad when I walk out of here," Allen said.
Allen says after she retires, she plans to take a trip to Hawaii, then it's back to the classroom as a volunteer.
School lets out two hours early today.
For kids in summer school, you only have a few days off. Summer school starts Monday.
