We always hope the news stories we cover make a difference. This week we learned one did.
On October 4, 2008 the Nixa High School Band competed in Valhalla, the Parkview High School band competition. They played a special arrangement in honor of the military men and women who died in the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
As part of the routine the musicians learned about Pearl Harbor and even wore dogs tags of some of the victims.
Before each contest performance the band listened to survivor stories.
This week the Nixa High School band is on a trip to Hawaii.
Somehow the US Pacific Fleet Naval band saw our story and invited the band members to play along.
Yesterday the two bands played together. You can see the Naval musicians getting ready in the background.
The band director said it was quite a thrill.
In this picture the two bands play Amercia the Beautiful and Stars and Stripes. A survivor of Pearl Harbor was in the audience and directed Stars and Stripes.
Tonight (5-29) the band played in front of the USS Missouri where Japan surrendered during World War 2. The picture below was taken during that performance.
