A felony arrest warrant has been issued for Colleen Hauser. She is the Minnesota woman who took off with her cancer-stricken son, 13-year old Daniel Hauser.
Daniel has been refusing chemotherapy saying he is instead following the teachings of the Nemenhah Band. The group is based right here in the Ozarks.
KSPR spoke exclusively with the leader of the band, Chief Medicine Man Phillip "Cloudpiler" Landis, earlier this week.
Thursday Landis told KSPR he has had no contact with Colleen or Daniel. He said he "supports their decision to seek an alternative cure for Daniel's cancer, but running was the wrong thing to do"
Landis is encouraging the Hausers to return home, saying "it can't be good for Daniel's health"
In an interview Monday Landis said he believes alternative medicines could work for the Hodgkins Lymphoma affecting Daniel. Landis said he himself used the Chaga Mushroom to cure his own cancer 18 years ago.
The Nemenhahs consider 13 to be the Age of Agency or the age of adulthood. Landis says Daniel is perfectly capable of making the decision to live the way he wants, or die the way he wants. Landis himself says he has a 13 year old son who is an elder of the church.
The 13 year old boy underwent one round of Chemotherapy and he said it was killing him. The latest x-ray shows Daniel's tumor is growing. Doctors say with Chemotherapy he has a 90% chance of survival. Without it, they say a 5% chance.
Landis says that is the doctors interpretation of the x-ray and he doesn't necessarily believe Daniel's cancer is getting worse. Landis said Colleen and Daniel had chosen an oncologist to see in Mexico. He believed the court would have let them go to Mexico to see that doctor, but now that they've run, all bets are off.
Landis has a rental home in Weaubleau, Missouri and that's the base listed on the Nemenhah website. But he tells KSPR they are in the midst of building a new lodge north of Stockton in Cedar County. He would not reveal the exact whereabouts because they consider the ground sacred and because the complex is not complete yet.
When pressed again about whether he has seen or talked to the Hausers since they left Minnesota Landis again said he had not.
