Embezzlement Charges in the Ozarks

By KSPR News

A former treasurer of a southwest Missouri town has been ordered to stand trial for the alleged embezzlement of more than $300,000 from the municipality.
Gene "Paul" Boyd, longtime treasurer for the town of Leawood south of Joplin, was bound over for trial after a preliminary hearing Monday in the Newton County Circuit Court. Authorities say the 62-year-old Boyd resigned his post in October.
Court documents say Boyd stole at least $325,000 in village funds between 2002 and 2008. An additional $673,000 in village money is unaccounted for.
Leawood officials contacted the Newton County Sheriff's Department about the alleged discrepancies in October. Officials at Boyd's then-employer, Empire District Electric Co., told investigators that he admitted stealing village money for more than
two decades.
