Conficker Virus Could Strike Wednesday - No Joke

By Doug Magditch

"We've really received a lot of calls about it," says Nate Calvert, of Computer Geeks in Springfield.

He's also been getting a lot of questions. If there's one thing I found out Tuesday, it's this current cyber threat isn't well-known.

"Are you afraid of the Conflicker Virus?" I asked one Springfieldian.

His response, "What is that?"

"Never even heard of it," said another Springfield resident.

"I don't even know what that is," said James Christian.

From what I've heard, Ozarkers better get ready for Wednesday. The early bird catches the worm.

"As long as you have good virus protection, your computer is up-to-date and you don't already have the virus, you should be safe," said Calvert.

He said more than one-million computer have the virus, and most people don't even know it's there.

That's because right now, "it's not really doing anything other than spreading itself," said Calvert.

Microsoft warns April 1st all those infected computers will start talking to a main host computer. What's worrisome is experts don't know what that means for users.

"At this time nobody knows exactly what the virus is going to do on your computer. I mean, it can be any where from pop-ups to send out SPAM messages to delete data on your computer," said Calvert.

It could even be worse than that. One reason Calvert's on his toes is Microsoft is offering a $250,000 bounty on the person responsible for the virus. That's something he's never seen before.

For now, users just need to make sure their computers are protected, because, according to Calvert, this is no April Fool's Joke.

Calvert says Computer Geeks will clean the conficker virus off customers' computers for free until April 15th.
