Gay Courtesy Resolution Rejected

By Brad Belote

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - A state senator says her resolution honoring the Heartland Men's Chorus has been rejected by the chamber's top leader because it mentions gay men and fighting homophobia.

Democratic Sen. Jolie Justus of Kansas City says she had planned to present the resolution to the group during a performance on
Saturday
.
Missouri lawmakers approve hundreds of such courtesy resolutions every year.

Senate President Pro Tem Charlie Shields says he won't sign the Heartland Men's Chorus resolution because some lawmakers might not want their names attached to it.

Justus says she won't rewrite the resolution. Instead, she'll present the Kansas City-based chorus a certificate from her office rather than one from the full Senate.
