JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Legislation making it a crime to coerce someone to have an abortion in Missouri ties up the state Senate for hours.
Opponents took the floor in the afternoon and filibustered for more than five hours before debate was halted. The measure did not come to a vote. It would also require doctors to provide certain information to women seeking abortions.
Proponents say they want to ensure women have accurate and adequate information before deciding to have an abortion.
But Sen. Joan Bray, a Democrat from St. Louis, says supporters are trying to "force women to have babies they don't want."
The bill would require a woman seeking an abortion to wait 24 hours before the procedure. During that time, the doctor would have to give her a chance to view an ultrasound and listen to the fetal heartbeat.
