MoDOT Federal Stimulus Money Projects

By KSPR News

Federal stimulus money is coming to a highway or bridge near you.
Tuesday with much fanfare, the Missouri Department of Transportation announced where it plans to spend federal stimulus money.
MoDOT announced what highway projects will get a boost from the federal funding.
Most of the projects in the Ozarks are called thin-lift overlay, which is a simple resurfacing.
But some of them are big projects, like the widening of Highway 65 to six lanes in east Springfield, the addition of passing lanes to Highway 60 between Monett and Republic, an additional lane on Highway 5 in Lebanon, and pavement rehabilitation along I-44 in St. Robert and west of Rolla.
Hollister will be able to build a new bridge over Lake Taneycomo.
Out of the $788 million Missouri is getting for construction projects.... 11 million will build that new bridge on Highway 76.
People in Hollister can't wait.
"That's been a very big deal to be able to fund that project," said Hollister City Administrator Rick Zigenfuss.
The new Highway 76 bridge in Hollister is among the larger projects that will get a funding boost from the federal government.
"With our ability to be nominated and put on this list it’s just a huge step forward for an area that needs that type of stimulus," Zigenfuss said.
OTHER LARGE PROJECTS:
* $9 million will add passing lanes to Highway 60 between Monett and Republic.
* $20 million will widen Highway 65 to six lanes in east Springfield.

There is a catch, but it's good for you and me. Missouri must have half its money obligated by this June. All of it must be spoken for by March of next year.
"Our director's direction has been to go as fast as we can and have enough ready so if somebody else doesn't have some ready we will be able to make use of those funds and put additional people to work," said MoDOT spokesman Kirk Juranas.
About 22 thousand people to work according to state estimates.

IN PERSPECTIVE
Transportation only makes up about six percent of the federal stimulus total.
Of that total, Missouri gets about one and a half percent.
