An Ozarks sailor accused of stabbing and choking prostitutes in Tijuana, Mexico last Thursday is facing new charges tonight.
22 -year-old Jarrett Monzingo of Cabool is now facing murder charges for the death of a Mexican citizen. It allegedly happened weeks before the most recent event.
But Monzingo's family friends say something is not right here, and they are suspicious of the government in Mexico.
"I just cannot imagine him doing this," says Kathy Wells. Wells was like a second mother to Monzingo during his high school years. She says Monzingo is good friends with her son, and the two were together all the time.
She says she can't believe that the same kid who weighed 110 pounds his senior year back in 2004 could be in the middle of an international incident.
"Even yesterday when he talked to his mother, he couldn't believe it," says Kathy, who's been in touch with Monzingo's mother who lives near Columbia. "I wasn't there you know, but I cannot imagine him doing that. The only way I could imagine him doing that is if he was afraid for his life."
"He was just so light hearted all the time,” says Joel Easter, the athletic director at Cabool High School. Easter coached Monzingo in baseball his junior and senior years and says the sailor was so small, that he worried he might get picked on when he joined the Navy.
Monzingo was a stellar student. He graduated from Cabool High School with distinction because he had good grades. More recently, he had been training to become a Navy SEAL. His family friends say he was such a good kid that it's hard for them to believe any of these accusations—though they admit, he made one mistake.
"He told his mother—point blank—that they went to a whorehouse,” says Wells. “It was not a hotel or a motel; it was a whorehouse. They were attacked while they were there, and they fought back."
Wells says it doesn't make sense for the two to have had any other reason to be there, but sex. "If you go to a house of prostitution, I don't think you're going there to kill somebody,” she said.
It may not be what his loved ones want to hear, but they say it gives them a little more insight to how the Jarrett—they knew—could've gotten involved. They think the latest murder charge is so left-field, they won't even acknowledge it.
"Not everyone gets to be a navy seal,” says Easter. “If that is indeed what he wants to do, I can't see him making that big of a mistake to throw it away, unless his life was in danger.”
Kathy Wells is married to Missouri state representative Don Wells. The two have contacted Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson for help. Their concern is that if this story is forgotten, the men will be, too.
The other sailor involved is a navy seal from New Jersey—both men are in a Tijuana prison, and law experts say it could take years before their case ever goes to trial.
