Ladybug Learning Center Had Multiple Violations Before License Loss

By Will Carter, KSPR News

The search for a new daycare is not what parents like Theresa Gerald wanted to do on a Monday.

"I'm so frustrated. Here I am this morning trying to find childcare for my daughter, and my daughter's afraid to go back to school," said Gerald.

On Friday Springfield Police closed the Ladybug Learning Center and escorted its owner to the hospital with an open wound staph infection. Coincidentally, that same day, the state faxed and mailed notification to the daycare saying it had lost its license.

"I have grave concerns about why we were not notified as parents, why they were not notified prior to February," said Gerald.

On Monday KSPR News went to the state's department of health and senior services, where we went through the Ladybug Learning Center's records over the past few years.

What we found after looking at Ladybug's records is that back in October the business was in violation of compliance because employees did not have their medical records on file, including tuberculosis testing.  The daycare also didn't have records of employee background checks.

Also in the file were allegations made in December that the center's owner, Carrie Beckenholdt, had not been working her required 40 hours a week during regular operating hours, all violations that make parents think differently about the daycare.

"I would say that I would have pulled my daughter out the second I heard any of that," said Gerald.

On Friday it was noted that the daycare had "failed to file a correct or current annual report" to the Missouri Secretary of State, ultimately voiding the center's license.  But parents have their own questions for the state.

"DFS knew they had these violations.  If DFS knew they lost their license, why didn't DFS shut them down that day," asked Gerald.

Springfield Police say the daycare's owner could face criminal charges of child abuse and endangerment.

Police say she was acting very strange and erratic when she was taken away.

We'll have much more on this story as it becomes available.
