Springfield Will Try to Get Federal Stimulus Money

By Michelle Sherwood

Perhaps, the most important thing people want to know is that the stimuls plan could help create jobs in the area.

KSPR called a prominent construction company that bids on roads, and a spokesperson said they're gearing up to put lots of people back to work.

Springfield city leaders are now brainstorming to see which projects they can promote to get some of Obama's stimulus money. They're looking at projects that could create jobs and do it quickly. An example of that is the job to add six lanes to Highway 65.

The city's best chance to get funding will likely come from projects that are partnership-based, says City Manager Greg Burris. Burris says those would likely mean Springfield projects that are connected to either Greene County or the Missouri Department of Transportation.

However, just because Springfield is banking on getting some sort of insfrastructure money, the city manager says the sales tax is still needed.

"The infrastructure stimulus money would likely be one-time money for project," says Burris. "There's a pool of money that would be divided out, but it would be divvied out, but it would be one-time, probably not-ongoing."

The sales tax, he says, is needed for ongoing funds.
