New veterans' clinics coming to Missouri

By Brad Belote

WASHINGTON (AP) - Missouri is getting three new community-based clinics for military veterans.

The Department of Veterans Affairs plans to open clinics next year in Excelsior Springs, located in northwest Missouri, and in the Bootheel town of Sikeston. A clinic in Sedalia is scheduled to open in 2010.

In a statement Thursday, Republican Sen. Kit Bond said the clinics "will make it easier for Missouri veterans to receive the health care they need."

Community-based clinics generally serve military veterans in rural areas. They offer comprehensive primary care, routine and urgent care procedures and education.

The clinics also provide mental health services, including counseling and substance abuse treatment.

Continued!! I got transfrerred to Houston TX, they gave me permission, and the hosp. still wanted to charge me for emerg care. Then I learn the VA does not consider it an emergency unless it is a heart attack, There are other urgencies that would not fall under that criteria. Us rural VETS are up a creek without a paddle Instead of clinics WE NEED A VA HOSP IN SGF, PLEASE, CLOSE ONE OF THE 3 UP NORTH SO WE CAN GET CARE HERE IN SOUTH MISSOURI.

I totally agree with the other 2 commentators,I will admit I have a very fine primary care team at Mt Vernon and have had for yrs. But they are limited on what kind of procedures they can do there, and they end up sending some of us clear to Little Rock AR for the more extensive procedures. We can not goto a local Hosp. in our small towns here in SW MO for urgent care with out getting permission from the nearest VA Hosp. first. And one time when I did call there was no answer in Fayetteville.

I agree with Beverly Burk, why don't the VA place a hospital in Springfield. The places were they keep putting these hospitals are out of the way for the majority of veterans visiting them. This is what happens when incompetant people are promoted to do an important task. Another failure of the Federal Government.

Why can't there be a veterans clinic in Springfield, it serves a large metropolitan area. Actually the veterans should be allowed to go to any hospital. Many are not well and shouldn't have to travel miles to see a doctor. Give them health care at any expense. Why limit it???
