Ozarkers Light Candles for World AIDS Day

By KSPR News

Ozarkers came out to Park Central Square in Springfield on Monday night for a candlelight vigil for World AIDS Day.

It was a night to remember those who've died and to spread support for those still living with HIV and AIDS.

The vigil put on by the Aids Project of the Ozarks and the Springfield-Greene County Health Department aimed to draw attention to the AIDS epidemic and how each of us can play a role in slowing and stopping it.

One HIV positive woman at the vigil said it's important to get tested.

“Twenty years ago my cousin was diagnosed and died from the virus. Three years ago I was diagnosed with HIV, and we have to support, not only ourselves, but our community," Lori Downing said.

Quilts remembering some who have died from HIV and AIDS were also spread across the square.
