The Greene County Health Department says it may never know the exact cause of a dog's death.
The dog’s owners say their Great Dane, Athena, was found skinned and mutilated in their backyard last week.
Police and animal control told KSPR they are unsure if an animal or human was responsible for the dog’s injuries.
A health department spokesperson says they did not take the dog's body to a veterinarian.
They say the dog was in such bad condition that a veterinarian could not determine how the animal died.
The spokesperson also told KSPR they do not have advanced forensic technology to determine if the dog was alive when it was skinned.
Police say the incident will likely not be assigned to a detective unless someone comes forward with information.
Officers say besides the dog's body there was no other evidence left at the scene.
Police say they need more evidence that a crime occurred.
The family told KSPR they found the dog skinned on both sides of its body with its heart missing.
Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers at 417-869-TIPS or 417-864-1810.
