Get Ready for Digital TV

By Natalie Swallow

The switch to digital TV is nearing, and many households still aren't prepared for the changeover in February.

The official turn off date for analog signals is February 17, 2009.

If you watch TV via antenna or rabbit ears, you need to get a digital converter box.

You can get a $40 coupon from the government to make the transition cost you only $10 or $15.

One common misconception with the switch is that digital means high definition.

In a recent survey, 29 percent of people thought so, but they're all wrong.

"With a converter box, what you're getting is an up converted analog signal. You will never get HD with a converter box. You can only get that with HD set with a HD tuner," KY3 Inc. General Manager Mike Scott said.

Even with all the ads, the Federal Communications Commission has put out to warn viewers, it says some might not be getting the message.

"There will be some people left behind on morning of February 18. They'll turn on their TVs and won't be able to see a picture because they didn't get their TVs hooked up to one of these boxes," FCC Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein said.

I have heard thru the grapevine, that low power stations are not under any obligation to quit transmitting. I guess this needs to be checked out a little further before we chuck the old tv sets.
