School Threat Leads To One Arrest in Dade County

By Will Carter

Greenfield Police confirmed late Friday afternoon that a female student from Greenfield High School was taken into custody by juvenile services in connection to a threatening letter.

Throughout the day police were parked in front of Greenfield High School Friday after the discovery.

"There was a threatening letter left in the school by a student, and it was to shoot and kill the people on the list," according to parent Penny Trask.

That letter was found in the school's hallway late Thursday afternoon by one of the school's faculty members. Trask has two sons that attend Greenfield High, and says she's concerned about the news.

"They need to wake up and realize this is a very serious threat. Anybody that takes the time to think that, and write that out...there's a strong possibility that they might do it," said Trask.

But Brenda Harding's granddaughter Mariah was on the list, and she says after meeting with the school, "they seem to think when we talked this morning that it was just a dramatic thing between a bunch of girls, but that doesn't really matter in today's world. It's scary."

While the campus opened on Friday, tighter security was visible. Signs on the doors tell students they only have one way in and out of campus, right now. That's because the other doors on the school premises are going to remain locked until the police can solve this investigation. Officers remained on guard as interviews continued with students, and the school worked to notify both them and their parents.

"I think you can't be overly cautious in a situation like this. Of up most importance, is the safety of our students and staff," said Superintendent Cheryl Mack.

But some still wonder why the school even opened at all.

"I was kind of surprised they did. I'm surprised they didn't call school off," said Harding.

There is still no motive as to why the girl wrote the letter. School administrators say they are sending a letter home to parents of all students at the high school.
