Former Marshfield City Employee Faces Four Felonies

By KSPR News
By Joanna Small

A former Marshfield city employee is facing four felonies for a stunt police say he pulled while in office.
Ex-city accountant Jeffrey Basnett resigned in March, right after the city of Marshfield ordered an independent audit of its credit card accounts.
The findings prompted city officials to then request the Missouri Highway Patrol conduct a criminal investigation.
As a result, Basnett was charged Wednesday with four counts of fraudulent use of a credit card and stealing from Marshfield.
Also as a result, the city is changing its policy.
“We're changing our process a little bit on how we pay credit card bills. We won't accept- we don't pay credit card statements off the internet. We pay statements that are mailed to us,” explains City Administrator Dan McMillan.
McMillan would release few details about the investigation or what discrepancies led to city's initial request for an audit.
He did say Marshfield has hired another accountant and is currently training her in.
