Dallas Co. Sheriff On Paid Leave After Shooting a Man

By KSPR News

The Dallas County sheriff is on paid administrative leave after shooting a man Wednesday afternoon.

The incident happened at 199 Willow Springs Road in Tunas near Highway 64.

The sheriff and two deputies went to a home looking for a burglary suspect and another man with a warrant.

When they arrived there was a group of people in the home. One man flashed a knife at the sheriff, and then locked himself in a room.

He then came out and allegedly lunged toward the sheriff in a threatening manner, so Sheriff Mike Rackley shot him.

The man is in critical condition in a Springfield hospital.

One of the men the deputies were looking for was arrested at the scene after he tried to run out the back door.

Tammy Womack was inside the trailer home at the time of the shooting.

Womack says the 24-year-old man who was shot was not wanted by the law or violent.

Womack says, "He had dropped the knife he didn't have a weapon in his hands that we could see when he came out."

Highway patrol investigations into officer involved shootings typically take 30 to 60 days.

Sheriff Rackley, the current incumbent for sheriff, could be taken off administrative leave during the November election.

No word yet if charges will be filed against the man who is in the hospital.

I attended school with Cory and always thought of him as a nice guy, some people may think that makes me partial to him, but he deserved to live. I know some law enforcement in Dallas County and they aren't all bad. Sheriff Rackley is a coward. Knowing Cory I believe he could have easily been talked out. Just remember citizens of Dallas County we are comming up on election time and you can voice your opinion then. I hope his family gets the justice they deserve not another cover up.

Let's face it, that department is a joke! They've drawn guns on me more than once, after pulling me over for no reason. I'm a 5ft woman w/no record. I guess I'm a BIG threat. They are all trigger happy; the most dangerous person on the planet is a scared cop; guaranteed to always have a weapon. More than once they have bent the law to get their way. Here's one for ya! Two of my friends were going to be ARRESTED by Dallas Co.; they had the WRONG MEN in each case. Guilty until proven innocent!

The man DID NOT have a knife the second time he came out of the room. AND if the man was a real threat why would you send a friend in and let them shut the door behind them?

I cannot beleive people are spreading rumors about my cousin and friend. Cory was shot TWICE in the head. Along with NINE other shots fired. If he was on meth how can his organs be donated, which they were. His organs saved three people. WOW. some drug attic. The door was kicked in, so how could he had busted out. All cops are trained to shoot to wound. Not shoot "from the hip." If he was shooting at the hip then how could he hit cory in the head twice. Thats a really horrible aim SHERRIFF.

Any time an individual branishes a weapon of any kind, runs away from law enforcement, locks themselves behind a closed door, and then comes out, will always put themselves in the disadvantage. Only persons with something to hide will run. The officer acted in response to a known threat.

We are all just numb over this, it is ashame that this had to happen. Cory was not a bad young man, sometimes in our lives we all have made bad choices. Think about yourselves in this situation before you put something out on the internet. Someone put out there that Cory was on Meth. How do you know that? And who do you think you are saying that when you don't know the truth. Yes maybe the cop waqs doing his job but he could of shot somewhere else not the head.

I am Cory's younger cousin. I completely disagree with everything that Officer Rackley did. People need to keep there mouth shuts because there are only two people who know the honest to God truth, and it hurts so bad to say that one of them can no longer speak. There were many other ways that this situation could have been handled and it WAS handled without a care. I understand that the Officer may have been defending himself, but while doing that, it took MY COUSIN'S LIFE

If a person pulls a knife or any weapon on law enforcement you are going to get shot. I am positive that Sheriff Rackley did what was best in this situation. He had not only his life to think about but the lives of the other deputies as well as the other people in the house. We could have ended up with a dead sheriff and a hostage situation with a man that may or may have been strung out on drugs with the sheriffs weapons now also. Rackley did what he was trained to do...Serve and protect!

for one why was a taser not used people. they are supposed to stop this kind of thing and they do have them at the department rackley went against his own policies. i have been in this spot and did not have to shoot anyone.there are many ways of handling this without lethal force.maybe we need to understand that. if this guy run in a room why would u stand outside the door an reason with him not knowing what he had inside the room far as weapons? think about it maybe we dont know everything.

The suspect had a large amount of meth in his system. He came running out of the kitchen with a knife swinging at Sheriff Rackley, then ran into the bedroom. Rackley tried reasoning with him through the door. The suspect said he would come out after he finished his cigarette (or dose of meth). He then busted through the door with his knife lunging toward the sheriff whose gun was still holstered. Luckily the sheriff was trained in shooting from the hip and plugged a few before being stabbed.

No one knows what truly happened unless you were there. This incident was truly unfortunate, but the Sheriff made it home to his family. Making it home is something all officers are trained to do. I don't believe that this was done because it was fun, he was only doing his job. All I can say is it's not anyones place to speculate what happened or guess an outcome....the evidence in the investigation will speak for itself. Let us all see what happens.

Interviewing witnesses doesn’t mean a station agrees/disagrees with them. In the video version of our story you’ll note we included information from the highway patrol including the statement that a knife is just as deadly as a gun. Thanks for watching and we appreciate your input.

I’m sorry you disagreed with using a demonstration. It is a story telling technique. Witnesses say the knife was a pocket knife that is why that type of knife was used. It's often unpopular to report both sides of an officer involved shooting but it is our job. In no way was KSPR implying Sheriff Rackley acted inappropriately. That is for highway patrol investigators to decide. We were simply the only station that interviewed witnesses.

A CCW course instructor told class if aomeone had a knife, shoot. They could move toward you & even if you hit them, their momentum could still pose a lethal threat. Also supporting Rackley.

ms rittman, it is disapointing the way that you have reported on this incident. the use of a knife in your report is misleading. you lead people to believe that the knife you used as a prop was the one the Sheriff had seen in the man's hand, coming at him in a menacing manner. let's hope that you sensationalistic reporting also reports the finding of the mshp investigation, even if it is non-sensational.

The one question I would like answered by the witness is how she would have known that he "dropped the knife" if "he didn't have a weapon in his hands that we could see when he came out." This young man made a choice and for every choice we make there will be consequences associated with them. He could have complied if he was truely "not wanted by the law or violent" just like the witness apparently did since she was not injured nor arrested. Think about it. You still have my support Rackley.
