Most of the time, Missouri state officials are trying to attract new students or staff members.
But this weekend, the university was trying to reach African Americans who've just moved into the area.
It may sound a little funny, but the organizers say in the long run, they hope it helps with diversity recruitment. They say to successfully recruit diverse people, it is also important to have a local community that welcomes them.
“It allows us to meet people, welcome them to the community, make them feel like a part of this community, so that when they come here they don't feel isolated,” said organizer Wes Pratt. “They feel part of something."
The reception was apart of a group called "The Gathering." Members say they hope local business leaders and members of the community will get involved in future events. For more information, go to
